An element that distinguishes each one of us is culture, and it is something that should be preserved. Through Maralj, Mariam Sultan Aljuwaied memorializes the details and craftsmanship that enriched Emirati culture in jewelry, seeing the beauty in history. By creating a holistic and empowering brand, Mariam hopes to help women feel beautiful in all their intrinsic glory, their identity, with her designs.
As a jewelry designer, Mariam works to find unique motifs to incorporate in her designs to create a true cultural experience and connection. “I find beauty in the details that often go unnoticed, such as the craft of khous and the resilience of the ghaf tree, and transform them into elegant jewelry pieces that reflect the authenticity and timelessness of my country.” Enriching her brand with history and heritage, Mariam introduces a signature style that boosts Maralj’s prominence in the market and leaves an impact on the customers.
Mariam’s membership with the Sharjah Business Women Council proved to be influential in her company’s beginning. By taking part in an exhibition, Mariam and SBWC paved Maralj’s way to bigger opportunities and partnerships. Participating in exhibitions and conventions is made difficult because they are based on connections and industry relationships, which is one of the reasons why women-led businesses struggle with their brand visibility and presence. “Through SBWC, I had the opportunity to participate in the Sharjah Jewelry Expo, an amazing experience that allowed me to showcase my work, connect with professionals in the field, and gain real exposure to the jewelry market,” she reminisces.
Mariam believes in the power of untapped potential and encourages fellow entrepreneurs to think of new ways to unleash it. To her, the answer was quite simple, combining her biggest strengths with her biggest passion. She suggests the same to any aspiring founder, “Use the skills you already have and let them guide your creativity. When you merge what you know with what you love, you can build something truly original and meaningful.” This passion carries entrepreneurs forward throughout the challenges of the business field, helping them navigate every rejection and praise with confidence, peace, and grace.
